Our local ROMEOs
|
Since there's no membership roster we can't list all the ROMEOs, but here are the intrepid people who lunched at Miss B's in December:
Bill Burnett, 67, of Leawood, a retired insurance professional, who rides a Honda Gold Wing.
Bob Diehl, 68, of Spring Hill, a retired consultant who rides a BMW and was once on the cover of Motorcycle Owners News. Diehl is a big-time cyclist who rides 30,000 to 50,000 miles every year. He has ridden in all 50 states, Canada, the Baja Peninsula, and the Arctic Circle. Among his favorite pathways is the "breathtaking" Icefields Parkway, a scenic road in Alberta, Canada. It parallels the Continental Divide, traversing the rugged landscape of the Canadian Rockies, meandering through Banff National Park and Jasper National Park.
This spring Diehl, with his wife, will make his fifth trip to Alaska.
"From here to Prudhoe Bay and back is about 9,000 miles," says Diehl, "but with these heaters, it's 70 degrees year-round!"
Don Dover, 72, of Spring Hill, a "mostly-retired carpenter" and also an avid member of a club for people who drive Miatas.
Gary Droege, 66, of Parkville, Mo., who rode in on his BMW. Droege began his career with Hallmark but that was interrupted by duty in Vietnam. Later, for 14 years he taught high school in Olathe. He's active with the Gold Wing Touring Association, the Motorcycle Touring Association, and Ride for Kids.
Mike Herrmann, 69, of Shawnee, who retired from Honeywell and is another Honda Gold Wing lover.
Ed James, 64, of Gardner, who retired from Comanche Construction and rides a Honda Gold Wing. James enjoys the ROMEO outings because "It gives me somewhere to go, and there's food!"
Junior Kilburn, 68, of Independence, Mo., who retired from Lafarge Ready Mix. On his BMW, Kilburn mostly rides by himself.
Neil Lagback, 71, of Overland Park, a twice-retired tool-and-die maker. Lagback has been riding since he was 11 years old and owns five bikes—some are touring motorcycles, some are for off-road trails. Lagback likes riding to meet the ROMEOs because "most guys leave their attitudes at home," he said, referring to the distinct absence of talk about politics and other topics that might get the riders' leathers in a knot. Lagback is partial to the 70 miles of trails in the Mark Twain Forest and to trails in Colorado and Utah.
George Miller, 72, of Olathe, who retired after 45 years with Black & Veatch. His wheels are a Honda Gold Wing.
Frank Morgan, 61, of Independence, Mo., who's an operations engineer retired from Health Midwest. He has a BMW.
Leland Prothe, 77, of Paola, who's still working. He has a stand of 2,200 pecan trees, which means that during the fall harvest he doesn't get much time on his BMW.
Ron Russell, 58, of Shawnee, who's a retired construction supervisor. He favors a Honda Gold Wing.
Manfred (64) and Donna (63) Schlenkvich, of Belton, Mo., who ride together as often as they can. He's a former Marine, she's a night-shift nurse.
Larry Showalter, 71, of Edgerton, who's a retired manager of data processing for the Shawnee Mission School District. Showalter rode in on his Suzuki Bergman scooter. With a motorcycle decked out with heated seats and heated hand grips, heated clothes (the jacket's heaters connect with the pants and gloves, the pants connect with the boots), Showalter and other "plugged in" riders will head out in temps down into the 20s.
Don Spangler, 72, of Lenexa, a retired meat cutter at McGonigle's Meat Market. Another Honda Gold Wing rider, Spangler likes to join the Wheatland Tour Riders out of Olathe, weekly in summer.
Duane Spieker, 78, of Shawnee, who rides a Kawasaki Voyager.
