"When I was around 11 years old, some of the kids in the neighborhood and I would get on the streetcar and try to go to the end of the line.

We liked to ride it downtown first, because there was a tunnel around 8th and Broadway, and you had to go through that tunnel; that was important. Then we rode the streetcar to someplace way out south, which is probably only 75th Street now.

Going downtown on a Saturday afternoon was wonderful. We didn't have to be doing anything, just going into the different stores and going to a movie. I think we were a lot easier to entertain back in those days—mainly because we didn't have a choice. There were all sorts of department stores and clothing stores, and we'd have lunch at Wolferman's. Later on, when I was working as an advertising copywriter at Kline's, a small department store, we went to Wolferman's every day for lunch."
