"One summer, when I was about 12, I worked at the Kansas City Country Club caddying. The club had moved from Loose Park to Mission Hills in 1925. This was in 1934, during the drought. There was no sprinkler system, so there was very little grass.

They would let boys come out there to caddy. We sat out in a room in the back of the clubhouse, and there was a man named Mr. Bill Leonard who was the caddy master. He would send us out to carry.

In those days, most golfers had a big, heavy, leather bag. If you carried a single bag, you got 50 cents. If you carried double, you got $1. The whole idea was to get a tip. If you got a 25-cent tip, that was a really big deal.

It was a lot of fun. The most fun of all was being able to buy a Milky Way candy bar at the club afterward, and sit and munch on that."
