Longtime AARP driving coordinator retires

Shirley W. Smith, who coordinated aspects of the AARP Driver Safety Program for 25 years without pay, has announced his retirement effective Oct. 1.

Beginning as an instructor and then moving up to associate state coordinator (serving Johnson County, among other cities in the region) and state coordinator, Smith ensured that seniors could take advantage of a regular schedule of driver-safety classes held at convenient locations. Besides promoting safe driving, the classes enable many older adults to save on their insurance premiums.

Smith was highly respected by all who worked with him. The Best Times thanks him for his incomparable service!
