There once was a farm
|
HThere once was a farm where
Children were born
And grew and played
Gardens provided
Food and flowers
There once was a farm where
Life had its laughter
Life had its sorrows
Life had its goals
And its triumphs
There once was a farm where
Horses provided the power
Crops were grown
And crops were harvested
Horses were ridden
And carried children to school
There once was a farm where
Livestock were fed
Eggs were gathered
Cool water pumped
From a well
There once was a farm where
Peaches and green beans
Were canned
Stored in a cave
Food for the winter
There once was a farm
Dear God, I remember this farm
With a white house
And a red barn
Children at play
There once was a farm
Now the white house and
Red barn are gone
Other structures
Have been dozed
A field of milo
Now grows
There once was a farm
Now, no children play
Now, no horses or
Cows or pigs or chickens
No rooster to wake a child
In time no one will know
My mother, her four sisters
And two brothers were born
In the home on this farm
And I was the child awakened
On a warm summer morning
With sunlight streaming through
An open window
Awakened by a rooster crowing
In time no one will know
There once was this farm
