Santa, please

My Mom said "Child, it's time for bed,
Santa can't come till you rest your head."
But I was worried, what if it would snow
a blanket of white, so how will he know?
How can he tell which house is right,
Even with Rudolph and his nose so bright?

Mom said, "No worries, he has his ways,
He sees you and knows just what you say."
But if our house he would happen to miss,
Something extra (might go) to a child on his list
With no hat or good gloves to help with the cold,
Like baby Jesus of whose birth, on this day, we are told.

"To help with your worries and help you to sleep
We'll give Santa a sign; this light you may keep.
We'll put it in the window, just here,
So Santa can see it as he draws near."
I checked its placement, adjusted it some,
Knowing now that Santa would come.

Mom lit the candle and I hurried to bed
But it was hard to sleep with the thought in my head:
What if I did it, if I blow out the light,
Would Santa leave extra gifts for that poor child tonight?
So I tossed and I turned and I rolled and I fought,
But I could not unthink the things that I thought.

I lay there remembering the baby with no place to stay
Whose birth was the reason for this wonderful day.
I slipped out of bed and went to the light,
Stood there and pondered just what I might,
So I put out the light with a puff and a prayer:
"Santa pass by my house, it's OK, I swear.

Go to the homes of the kid with the need
With an extra gift to place under their tree.
It's not a big deal, I've got plenty of stuff;
My family and me have more than enough."
I slept such a sleep when I got back to bed,
No visions of sugar plums did dance in my head.

The dream that I had was of a child in need
Who woke from the cold to a surprise indeed.
Santa had come with things big and small
To care for the needs of his family one and all.
My heart was so happy, my spirit so light
As I heard Santa's voice so loud and so bright.

"You're the reason why I am, why I do what I do
There's nothing more precious than a child like you."
He didn't sit down, he didn't get out,
Just whisked past without any doubt.
But his face was smiling, he knew that I knew,
With a nod and a wink and those words oh so true.

Merry Christmas to all, and blessings the year through!
