Human Service volunteers make a difference! |
Johnson County Human Services extends heartfelt thanks to each and every volunteer for making a difference in the lives of clients. You are greatly appreciated!
National Volunteer Week is celebrated April 10-16, this year around the theme of "Celebrating People in Action."
Human Services volunteers are indeed in action throughout the year, fulfilling the department's mission to provide essential human services that support the independence, dignity, and self-sufficiency of Johnson County residents.
Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week has grown in scope each year, drawing the support and endorsement of all subsequent U.S. presidents, governors, mayors, and other elected officials.
National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing, and encouraging people to seek out ways to engage in their communities. It's about demonstrating to the nation that by working together, in unison, we have the fortitude to meet our challenges and accomplish our goals. National Volunteer Week is about taking action, encouraging individuals and their communities to be at the center of social change—discovering and demonstrating their collective power to foster positive transformation.
Johnson County volunteers
During 2010, 1,500 volunteers provided an astounding 32,915 hours of service to Human Services. At an independent sector rate of $20.85 per volunteer hour, those generous volunteers provided $686,278 worth of talent! Volunteers contributed their efforts to many Human Services programs, including Outreach, Housing Services, Accessibility, Administrative Services, and of course the Area Agency on Aging (AAA).
A special event will be held in the summer to honor all Johnson County Human Services volunteers.
Join our volunteer team
There is no better time, than when we are honoring the volunteers who give of themselves, to join their efforts. Volunteers may choose activities that meet their interests and time schedules. There are volunteer opportunities tailored to your needs and talents.
The AAA has three priority volunteer programs: Meals on Wheels, Catch-a-Ride, and Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas (SHICK). Outreach has many opportunities through the Multi-Service Centers. Other opportunities include Helping Hands, Personal Shopper, Birthday Club, Valentine Stampede, and lots of vital clerical and office work.
