Extreme Yard Rakeover seeks volunteers, homeowners

It's hard to imagine that we'll be raking leaves any time soon, but fall will be here before we know it—and so will the Extreme Yard Rakeover project.

Sponsored by Jewish Family Services and Shepherd's Center of Kansas City Central, Extreme Yard Rakeover provides volunteers to rake the yards of qualifying adults over the age of 65 who can no longer do the work themselves and don't have the means to pay someone else to do it.

This year's event will take place the first three weeks of November. The agencies are taking applications through Sept. 15 from homeowners who need the service.

Organizers are also seeking volunteers to help; groups of three to 10 people are encouraged to sign up. Groups will be matched with a home and will choose a day and time to rake leaves and pick up fallen twigs; no trimming is involved and volunteers will not be asked to clean patio areas. Volunteer registration ends Oct. 15. Volunteers are also sought to visit homes during the first two weeks of October to assess the size of each yard and estimate the number of volunteers needed.

Homeowners requesting the service should call 913-981-8815 and leave their name and telephone number. Volunteers should call 913-327-8298 or e-mail extremeyardrakeover@gmail.com.
